Cape Town - Malmesbury Passenger Train 27 April 2002
One fine Cape autumn afternoon I took a drive towards Malmesbury to take some pictures of the Saturday afternoon passenger train to Malmesbury. 35-034 was in charge, hauling 7 Metro trailers that have been fitted with side steps. First stop for me was at Fisantkraal where quite a number of passengers were waiting. Following this, a quick shot in section over the wheat stubble, before going the long way round to Kalbaskraal.
Most of the passengers alighting at Kalbaskraal ignored the existence of the platform and footbridge, and climbed down the coach steps to cross the tracks. Meanwhile, the train assistant walked forward to set the points for Malmesbury as they were set for Saldanha.
Another shot on the way to Abbotsdale, then a departure shot from there. This departure was made notable (or not) by a possibly (probably) inebriated gent who fell out of the coach and landed flat on his face in a cloud of dust as the loco was passing my position. He seemed to survive his fall okay, and proceeded to stand up, dust himself off and stagger off down the hill.
Not long after we caught up with the train in Malmesbury station where they shunted the train into the yard somewhere after the passengers alighted. Â
The following week I went out to Kentemade to snap the train again, with Devil's Peak as the backdrop. This time 35-048 provided the power.
